Wikimapia, according to its Wikipedia page, is an online map resource that combines Google Maps with a wiki system, allowing users to add information (in the form of a note) to any location on the globe. Created by Alexandre Koriakine and Evgeniy Saveliev, the project was launched on May 24, 2006 and is aiming towards “describing the whole planet Earth“.
You can view it through the site itself, OR you can paste it into your own site. How to do it? The owner’s blog, said on how to put it in any page in 30 seconds:
- Go to WikiMapia.org site and find a part of the map that you need.
- Click WikiMapia at the top right corner and choose map on your page link.
- Move and resize frame you see to desired view, adjust view setting if needed and copy given html code to your page or blog.
Voila! The map can be viewed
FYI, until 8 March 2007, there are more than 3 million localities identified.
