- The German singer Nicole wins the Eurovision Song Contest 1982 for Germany, with the song Ein Bisschen Frieden. The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual competition held among active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The most notable winning Eurovision artists whose career was directly launched into the spotlight following their win were ABBA, who won the Contest for Sweden in 1974 with their song Waterloo.
Death
- Ville Ritola, Finnish athlete (b. 1896). In the 1920s, he won 8 Olympic medals, including 5 gold medals. He was internationally known as one of the “Flying Finns“. “The Flying Finn” was a nickname given to several Finnish middle and long-distance runners. The term has such international renown that it is often attached to notable Finnish sportsmen whose exploits are fleet of foot or have to do with fast cars.
