Summing it up, the Sony Ericsson P1 offers more than every other Sony Ericsson smartphone before. Positive changes are noticeable both in system performance and in the hardware equipment. In terms of software, the handset is identical to the previous UIQ 3 handsets and when compared to Nokia S60 smartphones it does lose only on Internet calls capabilities, which are much more developed in the latest S60 mobiles. Apart from that, the Sony Ericsson P1 could have put up a very good fight with every competing messenger device currently on the market if it were not for the inconvenient keyboard solution.

Whether you should choose UIQ for your next smartphone is a matter of discussion and according to us the most controversial point of argument should be the touchscreen functionality. We feel that the toll it takes on navigation usability is greater than the added benefit of handwriting recognition, which is the only feature that really can justify the use of a stylus. Somehow, the smartphone platform cannot really use the stylus efficiently as much as PocketPC does and it turns into more of a deterrent since you have to use both your hands to do things you could have easily done with a simple joystick or a D-pad if one was available.

The volume of the 40-chord ringer is quite sufficient– it doesn’t deliver any problems, making sure that the device sounds loud enough to be heard in most cases. The silent alert is average strength-wise, but thanks to the casing’s thickness, there is no problem with feeling the vibration. It seemed to me that the volume level of the earpiece is lower that the Sony Ericsson M600i, in noisy environments it might prove sub-standard. The same goes for the handsfree mode, the P1i falls flat on the volume front (I attribute that to new location and design of the loudspeaker).

The Sony Ericsson P1i’s positives include touch screen, tidy camera, and all connectivity options you would ever wish for – from Infrared to WiFi. The dimensions are also decent, which makes it the P1i a recommended choice for those who can’t accept functionality sacrificed for better ergonomics. By and large the model is well-made, looks interesting, the only disappointment is the maker’s desire to get the full battery of extra software by September and only then start shipping it (for example, the DivX player). Unlike the first models running on UIQ 3.0, this is a polished offering, giving you far more firm feel of stability, all thanks to the increased memory volume. This is a fetching product with its own charisma (like the Motorola Z8, it is not only about functionality, but also brilliant design).

The Sony Ericsson P1i’s sales are kicking off in September at the 650 Euro mark. It is an adequate price for the smartphone flagship, especially in view of the fact that is successor will come out only in the beginning of 2008. Don’t end up expecting the P1i’s price curve will go straight down – there are no prerequisites for that, more importantly, making it a widely spread offering is not on Sony Ericsson’s to-do list.

We like the P1! Compared to the M600, the new P-series smartphone offers the desired high-quality camera and Wireless LAN (WiFi) which is a must in such style device. When put next to the P990, the P1 reduces the size, removes the dual-type keyboard and with the hybrid QWERTY allows for even faster text typing. P1 is not only successor of the M600, it is the successor of the P990 and it is a good one. Its main drawback is the tri-band GSM and single-band UMTS, but if you are in the supported frequencies, P1 will give you all the bells and whistles of a UIQ phone plus very good multimedia including music and video player, FM Radio and good 3MP auto-focus camera. Alternatives are Windows Mobile Professional phones, which also have stylus-based OS and offer an environment, closer to the one on a personal computer with Windows, which has both positive and negative sides.

The Sony Ericsson P1 has tortured me. I wanted to like it. I expected to like it. It has a great spec sheet, it is good looking, and it fits ever so easily into even the smallest of pockets. Yet, I do not like the P1. I’ve had too many problems with the device. WiFi has been a constant issue and the lack of EDGE support makes that all the worse. The disappearing inboxes are vexing, and the Exchange ActiveSync support is not quite up to snuff. Worst for me, perhaps, is that the menus and applications are simply too difficult to navigate without using a stylus. The scroll-wheel has proven itself inadequate, and the deep set on-screen softkeys are inconvenient - at best.

The end result is that I cannot recommend the P1. There are just too many devices on the market that are faster, easier to use, and have fewer problems. Few devices can offer the combination of an auto-focus camera and a QWERTY keyboard, but unless that combination is the only thing that will satisfy you, there are many devices that do messaging, multimedia, and mobile web browsing better than the P1.
